Biotechnology testing and research facilities

Biotechnology testing and research facilities

The NCRST has established a GMO testing laboratory, launched 29 January 2018. The laboratory will provide testing services for GMO’s as is required by the Biosafety Act, 2006 (Act No. 7 of 2006). The establishment of the laboratory is crucial in ensuring that only GMO’s and GMO products that are approved for use in Namibia are indeed on the market and also for ensuring traceability all along the whole supply chain from seed producers to final consumers. The laboratory will play a big role building local capacity in terms of producing a cadre of professional and researchers in this field and ultimately producing bio products that are designed for and suited for local use, rather than relying on imports.

Development of a coherent national Sustainable Bioeconomy strategy.

The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST), Food and Agriculture Organization, together with focus groups from different sectors in Namibia, facilitated the development of a draft Bioeconomy Strategy which will set the scene for implementing national programs and initiatives that will facilitate and support innovation in the Biotechnology field.
